Ahmedabad is plugging into the green future, gearing up to welcome 12 high-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by the end of July. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) issued the tender for the stations to be established at 24 city locations. The green light was given to the innovative start-up, EVamp Technologies Private Ltd, to handpick 12 of them and develop these locations. Working in tandem with AMC under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, this strategy was designed to avoid monopolisation.

These high-powered stations promise to deliver a full charge in a swift 30-40 minutes, a significant improvement on current lengthy charging times. Each station will boast 60 square metres of space, accommodating four charging points: two apiece for two-wheelers and four-wheelers. A provision for three-wheelers is also on the drawing board for a select few locations.

Historically, prior AMC-supported EV stations encountered setbacks due to slow charging capabilities and communication deficits. This time around, the strategy includes AMC’s more active participation to ensure success.

An AMC official emphasized the underlying goal of this project: “We aim to reduce carbon emissions and prompt a shift towards environment-friendly transportation. Both the state and central government are advocating for EVs.”

Details about the business model were also provided, with the official stating, “The start-up has consented to pay a fixed amount for land at specific Jantri rates, sharing a portion of their revenue with AMC. They will also pay Rs 3.51 per unit to the civic body for electricity consumption.”

The Vahan Dashboard reveals that Ahmedabad, with four major Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), has seen robust EV sales since 2019. Approximately 22,000 two-wheelers, 1,200 four-wheelers, and 5,000 three-wheelers have been sold so far.

Devansh Shah, the founder of EVamp Technologies Private Ltd, outlined the keys to success, “Prioritizing power availability and charger installation capacity is crucial.” He also underscored the importance of this facility for EV users: “Having a dedicated place to charge, without requiring extensive modifications to existing structures, is a boon for users. This service will be available to both residents and intercity travellers.”

Operating under the brand name MobiLane, the start-up aims to create a comprehensive charging station network, catering to all types of EVs. High-capacity chargers of 80 KW and above will be installed for four-wheelers, and 3.6 KW and above for two and three-wheelers. Selected stations will also feature battery swapping facilities.

Shah commended AMC for their forward-thinking approach, “AMC’s tender release is a commendable move towards a sustainable future.” He pointed to successful initiatives at Kevadia, GIFT City, and highways as proof of concept.
